The PEI Food Exchange is a registered non-profit volunteer organization. The Food Exchange was formed in 2013 after the first PROOF report on household food insecurity was issued.
Concerned that PEI, a province famous for its agriculture, had some of the highest rates of household food insecurity in Canada a small group of citizens came together to determine what could be done to empower individuals to increase food security for themselves and their communities.
Our intiatives include:
gleaning,
garden and food skills workshops,
community capacity building,
community cook days,
providing information on local food sources.
The PEI Food Exchange organizes volunteers ("gleaners") to harvest non commercial crops on island farms. We harvest approximately 10,000 pounds of fresh produce each year which is shared between people who help with the harvest, social service agencies and farmers.
Mike MacDonald, head of the PEI Food Bank Association, said in a November 2015 interview with CBC "new assistance from the PEI Food Exchange could be helping reduce islander's reliance on food banks".
To ensure eaters are able to cook and preserve the produce that is harvested the PEI Food Exchange provides food skills workshops.
The PEI Food Exchange encourages people to grow some of their own food by hosting garden skills workshops, providing garden skills and a list community garden.
We gather to cook meals to deliver to community fridges.
The PEI Food Exchange promotes the local food system and provides eaters with information on how to access local food. Questions about local sources of food are often answered in the facebook group and we provide a List of CSA's on PEI.
"This has been a very resourceful group - last year I didn't know much at all about sourcing local foods...now, I host monthly Neighbourhood Cook Days for families in need and I'm thrilled to say we use all locally grown veggies, farm fresh eggs from chickens raised right here in PEI. So, thank you so much to all the wonderful local farmers who create such amazing, healthy food and all the great resources on this site...it is wonderful to be able to help and teach others to become self sufficient and healthier in their food choices". Tammy
The PEI Food Exchange has delivered five Community Food Mentor (CFM) programs. The CFM program aims to build partnerships and community capacity to increase food security on PEI.
Our main communication tool is social media. To keep up to date on upcoming harvests, workshops, events, garden skills and items related to food security and the local food system join our facebook group.
