Food Insecurity on PEI

What does household food insecurity look like of PEI?

In 2013 the Proof report "Household Food Insecurity" brought new levels of information and analysis into the public domain and the data for PEI was cause for concern. 

PEI, known as the million acre farm has one of the highest rates of household food insecurity in Canada. The PROOF reports can be found at proof.utoronto.ca

From the 2013 report we have a good picture of what food insecurity looks like on PEI.

While a similar breakdown is not available since the  2013 report  we know that the percentage of food insecure households has increased from 15.4% to 16.7% and the severity of household food insecurity experienced has increased.
  • one in four children on PEI resides in a household experiencing food insecurity
  • urban and rural levels of food insecurity are almost equal on PEI
  • over 70% of food insecure households on PEI are waged or self employed
  • women headed single parent families suffer the highest rates on food insecurity on PEI.​

Join us for a new program starting in September 2025 for people 50+ called EAT MOVE & GROOVE.
Community Cook Days - We gather to make 100 meals for people in need every month. Volunteers are invited to take meals home. One of the cook days has a foraged food theme.  To join email  [email protected]
